AMERICAN PSYCHO - by Jason Huff & Mimi Cabell (NYC, 2012)

800 relevant ads

Until now, books were the last advertisement free refuge.

AMERICAN PSYCHO was created by sending all 400 pages of Bret Easton Ellis' novel through a GMail conversation. Google reads the emails and uses that profiling strategy to select relevant ads from the text. This "misreading" ultimately echoes the center of a future way to read (and publish) books. What remains is triggered by the novel, 800 relevant ads perfectly bound in a book. A story told through the eyes of a real American Psycho. 2nd degree murder

There is an idea of Google/ad bots as well as Bateman: "some kind of abstraction. But there is nothing real: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, .. I simply am not there."

- Patrick Bateman
